1. Ceramic or Laminate Tile
Getting the look of tile without the higher risks for cracking is relatively easy to accomplish with paint. First, the existing concrete surface must be thoroughly cleaned and polished. Any cracks or blemishes should be repaired as well. The concrete is then painted in a solid color that imitates grout. When this layer dries, lines are taped off with painter’s tape and paint is applied in the desired color. Several coats will be necessary. The tape is removed and when the floor dry, a protective clear coating is applied. This technique is commonly done in a square pattern, but more elaborate designs are an option.
2. Marble
Marble is perhaps one of the most expensive materials used in flooring solutions, but also one of the most luxurious. To get a similar look without the same price tag, there are multiple techniques that can be employed. These depend on the color tone and saturation that is desired for the finished surface. Through the application of paint, stains, or dyes, a designer can create a marbled appearance. Colors can be mixed and applied using various techniques. The finished result can be sealed with a high-shine coating for accuracy and ease of cleaning.
3. Slate, Flagstone, or Cobblestone
There are several types of natural stone that are attractive in outdoor patios and covered walkways. A custom installation can be labor-intensive and if damaged, is difficult to repair. Get the look of several types of stonework or similar natural material through concrete stains. Often these stains are applied by hand using different types of sponges, rags, and brushes to get a natural look. Acid staining can create a similar look, but is not appropriate in all settings, such as when moisture content is high.
4. Wood
Wood floors are gorgeous, but need a lot of maintenance and are susceptible to all kinds of wear and tear. They are not a good choice in high-traffic areas, but there is a concrete alternative. Concrete stamping can produce a wood grain texture that is highly accurate.
The process involves several steps and can be both costly and time-consuming. However, the results are impressive. First, existing concrete must be smoothed and a layer of concrete coating applied. The coating must be stamped before it dries, and then is painted in varying tones to create a natural-looking wood color. Finally, the surface is sealed.
There are just a few examples of what can be done with concrete floor finishes. It is important to work with a skilled contractor to get the desired results.
